You can begin pumping any time. Has your baby been born yet? Right after your milk comes in is a great time to start pumping, because at first your newborn will not eat a lot and you may have an oversupply of milk. Pump after feeding your baby and save the milk in the freezer to start a stash of milk for emergencies.
Some babies can switch back and forth from the breast and bottle from birth. Others do better if breastfed exclusively for 4-6 weeks before introducing the bottle. Try not to wait too long though, as older babies may refuse the bottle.

You should start pumping 2-3 weeks before you go back to work. Don't pump often, because it will cause you to produce too much milk. At that point, let someone else introduce the bottle with pumped milk to the baby. Most likely the baby won't take it from you, or will fight it. Make sure to keep giving your little one a bottle every other day or so, so they remember when you go back to work. If your baby won't take the bottle, buy a couple different kinds and try them out until you find one that works.
