Here are some of the top reasons why moms buy a breast pump to express milk instead of breastfeeding directly every time:
    * To go to work or out and leave the baby with someone else to get expressed milk and not formula.
    * To express a small amount of milk to mix with baby cereal
    * To relieve painful engorgement.
    * A very premature baby may not be able to nurse properly until he or she is bigger.
    * Babies who are born with a cleft lip or palate may have difficulty nursing.
    * To prepare for surgery that requires medication unsafe for an infant
    * To maintain or stimulate or build up their milk supply

There are many reasons why women choose to buy breast pumps.
Many women have to return to work during the time when they are still breastfeeding. Some women breastfeed past 1 year even.
Breast pumps can be very helpful when a women is engorged and a baby is not latching on properly.
Some women have to pump to relieve some of the engorgement so the baby can properly latch as well.
Many OB/Ped MD’s suggest a breast pump as a valuable tool that will help women breast feed longer.
Some women choose to pump to build up a milk supply for times when breastfeeding would be inconvenient or so that someone else can take turns feeding the baby.

I bought it first because you never know if the baby will latch on, so I want to be prepared for my baby to have breast milk just in case. Second, if I want a break from her latching on and want someone else to feed her, I can have a bottle pumped and ready for her. Also when I go back to work, I cannot take her with me, so I will need to have milk ready for her. There are so many reasons to have a breast pump.

It’s not just about filling up bottles. Sometimes the breasts produce more milk than the baby drinks and this can cause infection if it isn’t pumped out to relieve the pressure. It’s extremely painful and breasts become rock hard.
When babies are small, the first 1-3 months, they are inexperienced at suckling and sometimes first time mothers do not know how to let them latch on properly. All the breast milk isn’t utilized, so it needs to be pumped out.
It’s not a sin to teach your baby to drink from a bottle early on anyhow. I let my daughter alternate between the bottle and breast, and when it was time to wean her I didn’t have problems! I also currently live in the Middle East and breast-feeding public is simply not allowed, so it was easier to take bottles to go shopping, etc.
There are various reasons women choose to pump milk, not only because they work.

another reason is if the mother is sick and cannot breast feed the baby whist they are sick, or if the mother is in hospital and is on heavy medication and cannot breast feed due to the meds, then in this case if the mother wishes to continue breast feeding after illness has passed, she must continue to express the milk using a pump even though the baby cannot consume it at the time. Reason being if the mother does not express milk on a regular basis the milk ducts will dry up. So the mother is basically expressing the milk and discarding it only to keep the milk flowing!

it’s nice to have milk on hand so if that way dad can take turns getting up in the night and feed with the bottle if the milk is pre pumped. Also, You can’t drink alcohol for 24 hours before brest feeding so if you want to have wine with dinner, a night out, or just some drinks for the hell of it, you can to pump before hand. These are the reasons were getting a pump.

I wanted to go on a date with my husband and not worry about a starving baby at home, and I didn’t want to supplement with formula. It was also useful when I was running errands. If I had a bottle of pumped milk then I didn’t have to feel nervous about breastfeeding in public.
Also, I could never hand express for some reason, my milk is difficult to get.
After having bought it though, I rarely used it because I hated it.

My wife don’t agreed upon using breast pumps. I tried my beast to persuade her but she is insisting on using powdered milk and just feed from breast when she is at home and baby desires to have.

My wife never feed our baby directly and always use breast pumps for expressing milk. Because she don’t like to stay at home, that is her manufacturing fault.

Well many women these days such as myself can not afford to not work so when we work there has to be a way of getting our milk to the baby if we are breast feeding.
